UNEX: Unique Modernization of the Foundry Will Cost 80 million

Uničov, December 8, 2008

UNEX engineering and metallurgical complex is completing the first – preparatory - part of an extensive modernization project, the purpose of which is the establishment of state-of-the-art metallurgical operation in the Czech Republic. The project involves 14 suppliers; the consultant is the College of Mining – Technical University of Ostrava. The test operation of the modernized foundry production is assumed to start in September 2009, and by then, more than 80 million Czech crowns will have been invested in (Uničov) Brníčko. The complete technological equipment will enable an increase in the production of large castings by approximately 3,600 tons per year.

The project substance consists of significant improvement in the method of making molds in which the final products are then cast, including all related technology. Whereas the existing mold-making method has very high requirements on the qualifications, skills and physical ability of the personnel, the use of an organic (furan) connective system will significantly reduce the amount of the casting work. This will also significantly improve the quality of the castings as concerns accuracy and surface quality. The energy consumption of the finishing operations will decrease, among other things.

Another significant aspect is the ecological benefit of the modernization: 85% of the furan molding mix can be recycled, which results in a significant reduction of deposited waste. Dustiness will decrease significantly in the workplace. None of the technology uses water; therefore, there is no potential contamination present.
