The first modernization of part of the bucket-wheel boom on the KU300 range of excavators has been successfully completed

The metallurgical and engineering complex UNEX a.s., producer of technological units, mechanization parts and castings, has met the deadline for returning to the firm of PRODECO a.s., subsidiary company to Severočeské doly a.s., their KU300/30 –K91 bucket-wheel excavator, which had undergone reconstruction and modernization of the front part of the bucket-wheel boom.
The principal aim of this modernization was to increase the digging power and performance of the excavator to allow the excavator to mine overburden in even the hardest of geological mining conditions in the Bílina mine. Other major benefits of the reconstruction include improved cutting speed, thus reducing the lumpiness of the mined material, increased lifetime and operating reliability of the parts on the wheel drive, and reduced vibrations of the front bucket-wheel boom, the steel structure of which was not rigid or stable enough, by replacing it for a completely new construction, which is more rigid and sturdier. An important improvement is the adjustability of the wheel rotation speed, which, amongst other things, allows the excavator to be used at different settings when mining coal at lower revs; this keeps the lumps of coal cut at the largest possible size.
The plans and draft documentation were drawn up in collaboration between the firms of UNEX a.s. and PRODECO a.s.. The electrical parts were supplied by Elektroprim Koutník a.s. The steel structure of the boom itself, together with the wheel, its abrasive ring and the conveyor belt, were produced and assembled within UNEX.

Currently the mining company is operating more than 30 excavators produced by Unex, most of which the mining company is planning to modernize over the next few years. We see the reconstruction of the KU300 excavator as a unique testimonial for all of our present and future clients”, said Unex General Director.
The performance tests that were carried out on 4 – 5 December 2004 confirmed the parameters required for the excavator. At the same time, the tests showed a 100% reliability coefficient, compared to the originally anticipated and guaranteed reliability factor of 99%. “The machine was handed over to the client within the originally agreed deadline. Considering the results of the performance tests, and with regard to the fact that the machine has been running at full power for the last two months, the modernization of the machine can be seen as a success.”, added General Director of Unex.
